Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 13 said that in the next fortnight 1 lakh people will be tested for Coronavirus infection in the state out of which 50,000 alone will be tested in Guwahati.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma said that based on the results of these tests, decision will be taken whether or not to re-impose lockdown in the city to contain the spread of the virus.
“After testing 50,000 people, if a sizeable number is found positive then the state government might consider another phase of lockdown,” said Sarma adding that the present COVID-19 infection in the city is a “cause of concern”.
Public swab collection will be conducted at 12 different centres in the city where people can get tested for COVID-19.
People who wish to get tested voluntarily can also visit the centers. Also, the health department will be keeping a tab on all the pharmacies for details of people buying medicine for fever in the next few days. Such people will be tested for COVID-19, if required.
Also, the minister informed that the state government will have to consider changing the curfew timing from 9 pm to 7 pm onwards if the tests results in Guwahati indicate widespread contamination.
