Police in Manipur’s Bishnupur district have seized 49.7 kg of opium, worth over Rs 1 crore during a check to a truck.

The police also arrested the driver of the truck who has been identified as Langpoklakpam Kiran Singh (29) of Torbung Bangla village of Bishnupur district in Manipur.

A team of Bishnupur district police recovered the opium during a check to the truck coming from Churachandpur side on Imphal-Churachandpur road on January 7, police said.

Bishnupur district superintendent of police (SP), N Herojit Singh alleged that the opium was about to be transported outside the state through Jiribam along NH 37.

Addressing the media on January 8 at his office chamber at Bishnupur district headquarters in Manipur, the police officer said that the contraband item was found concealed at different parts of the truck. He further said that the opium was packed in 63 packets.

The arrested person along with the recovered contraband item was handed over to Bishnupur police station for necessary legal procedures, Herojit said.

Meanwhile, the police officer said that the district police has intensified its drive against drugs, alcohol and other intoxicated items in view of the upcoming polls to the Manipur legislative assembly.

The drive has been intensified for free and fair conduct of the polls, he said, while adding that the district police will not leave no stone unturned to conduct the upcoming polls smoothly.
