Daughter of a doctor who recently died has alleged that her father was meted out inhuman treatment at the time of death and all his belongings were stolen when he was being admitted at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.

Doctor Anil Tamuly, who was working as a medical officer in Jokai Model Hospital in Dibrugarh, died of cardio-respiratory failure inside the ICU at AMCH on September 30. His daughter, Anna Tamuly, wrote on Facebook that he was admitted at the hospital on September 17.

“…when I went to receive him for his last rites, none of his belongings were handed over to us by the ICU authorities…What broke my heart was that even the clothes, which he had worn when he was admitted, were not there. He was sent back only in a diaper… A dignified doctor like him was not even wrapped in a white cloth at the time of death. After giving 40 years of his life serving the society, my father didn’t deserve such adieu,” Anna said in her post.

She further said that her father was wearing a gold chain on his neck and he had his mobile phone, his bag of clothes and a wallet with debit card, driving license and pan card, but none was returned to the family members by the AMCH authorities.

Anna also raised serious questions on the way her father was treated during his stay at the hospital.

“…if attendants are not informed anything and if attendants are not allowed inside, how will anyone know whether a patient is actually being treated and taken care of or just waiting for him/her to empty the hospital bed somehow either by dying or getting cured. I’m honestly not here to question or blame the doctor’s treatments who were really toiling hard,” she added.

Narrating the ordeal, Anna wrote: “My father was in ICU bed no 7 in COVID ward of Medicine block. He was talking normally to my mother and me on the phone till September 19 evening. While he was on ventilator, his vitals were normal. But on September 20 early morning, my father could make his last call and asked us to take him away.”

“We had no idea what was happening to him since we were not allowed inside the ICU and the green zone control room didn’t respond”.

The social media post has since gone viral with several netizens condemning the treatment to the deceased doctor.
