Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented Pandit Tirthanath Sarma-Nirmala Devi Memorial Award to noted Assamese litterateur and critic Malini Goswami in a programme held at District Library auditorium in Guwahati on Monday.

The award is instituted by Pandit Tirthanath Sarma-Nirmala Devi Memorial Trust and carries a memorial, citation, gamosa and cash reward of Rs 50,000. The award ceremony was organized by the trust in association with Assam Region of Vivekananda Kendra.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal recalled the invaluable contributions of Pandit Tirthanath Sarma in the academic field of the state. He also urged the teaching fraternity and the parents to draw inspiration from his teachings and nurture the youth with value based education.

Underlining the modern day challenges, Sonowal pointed out the difficulties that the new generation has to endure to achieve success in life. He advocated building a strong foundation for them through dissemination of lessons of the great stalwarts of the state like Sankardev and Madhavdev.

The CM also underlined the contributions of Malini Goswami in the growth of Assamese literature and in the field of research. He expressed hope that the award would inspire her more to continue her literary and creative pursuits unabated.
