Lead guitarist of acclaimed rock band Parikrama, Sonam Sherpa passed away on February 14 at the age of 48.

According to reports, the musician, who was at Kurseong in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, suffered a massive cardiac arrest.

Indian Express quoted Parikrama vocalist Nitin Malik as saying: “At this point, we have very limited information because Sonam was out of town. Apparently, he had a heart attack this morning. I can confirm that he didn’t have any heart condition. He was in fact very health conscious in the last ten years. He was eating right and sleeping right. He was really taking good care of himself. He had started exercising recently as well and lost a lot of weight. He was trying to be as fit as possible.”

Sherpa was known to be playing guitars since he was 9, and went on to form the band Parikrama in 1991 in Delhi along with Subir Malik who plays organ in the band. Some of his popular works include But It Rained, Tears of the Wizard and Am I Dreaming.

In a message to the fans, the band said: “With a very heavy heart, we regret to inform the sudden demise of our backbone, Mr Sonam Sherpa. It’s very very tough to lose a band mate, a brother and a mentor. Thank you all for all your messages and tributes to Sonam, he sure will have a Great Gig in The sky. Farewell my friend.”
