People travelling to Assam from outside the Northeast states will have to undergo mandatory home quarantine for seven days. The travellers will also have to get themselves mandatorily tested for COVID-19.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 21 announced that expect government officials and those travelling for medical reason, everyone will have to undergo home quarantine for seven days.

“For all people traveling to Assam a 7-day home quarantine is being mandatory, in addition to the testing. Government officials and those traveling for medical reasons, and people with bereavement cases shall be exempted,” the minister tweeted.

Sarma informed that the state government is ramping up COVID-19 testing centres. “We’re ramping up #COVID19 testing facilities by creating a screening centre in every ward of Guwahati City so that people can get access to RTPCR or Rapid Antigen test without any hassle,” he tweeted.

The health minister further informed that if the daily fresh case count in Kamrup Metro district, that includes main city Guwahati, touches 1000, the district administration may close down all educational institutions and hostels.

“In case the daily case rate in Guwahati Metro touches 1000, the district administration has been authorized to take a decision to close down educational institutions & hostels,” the minister tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Sarma informed that the Assam government has granted all oxygen carrying vehicles – tankers carrying Nitrogen, Argon and Oxygen – the status of ambulance, to enable their hassle-free movement in state and transit through Assam for speedy delivery of oxygen to critical centres.

Assam on April 20 reported 1651 fresh cases of COVID-19 taking the total number of active cases to 7685 in the state. This includes 742 fresh cases of COVID-19 from Kamrup Metro district.
