Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati has been temporarily closed for new patients as a post graduate student there was tested positive for COVID-19 on May 7 night.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 8 informed that because a PG student was tested positive at GMCH, everyone who came in contact with him will be screened and the entire GMCH premises will be sanitized before taking new patients.

“A PG student at Gauhati Medical College has tested COVID-19 positive last night (May 7). Consequently we have to screen everyone who came in contact with him and sanitize the entire GMCH premises. As such we have to close the hospital for new patients for next few days,” he tweeted.

The minister further informed that special arrangements will be made for indoor patients. “Although we are closing the hospital (GMCH) for new patients, special arrangements will be in place for patient already admitted and collection of new swab samples. Soliciting cooperation and understanding from all, in the interest of public safety,” Sarma added.

Assam on May 7 reported 8 new cases, taking the total tally in the state to 53. Among these, 4 cases each were reported from Guwahati and Silchar.
