An inspector-level officer – Bachan Singh – was arrested on October 15 night for allegedly rape of a trainee constable in Golaghat district of Assam.

Police officials on October 16 said that the accused committed the crime on October 2.

Golaghat SP Pushpraj Singh said: “He was arrested on October 15 and sent to judicial custody.”

The accused was detained on October 14 for questioning for allegedly raping the woman constable trainee inside the Assam Police Training Centre at Dergaon.

A senior police official said that the preliminary probe revealed Bachan Singh allegedly raping the woman at his office.

The official said the incident took place on October 2 after which the trainee constable left the institute and went home. An FIR has been filed on October 13.

The incident came to light after the victim narrated the incident to her husband who intimidated the police headquarters in Guwahati and filed a complaint at Dergaon Police Station.

“She informed her husband about the incident and approached the police. Accordingly, a case was registered and the accused was apprehended,” the official added.

The accused is currently employed as chief drill instructor (CDI) of the Armed Police Training Centre.
