Rape accused shot at by police in Biswanath

In yet another incident of encounter in Assam, Biswanath police shot at a man accused of rape when he allegedly tried to flee from police custody on April 3 night.

Muhim Sarma, 56, sustained bullet injuries and has been admitted in the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital.

Sarma who hails from Kathonibarighat of Biswanath district was accused of raping a girl. The locals handed him over to the police. As per the reports, Sarma tried to flee from custody which led the police to fire at him.

The accused sustained injuries in his leg.

Just a couple of days ago, three dacoits were killed in police firing in Goalpara.

They were suspected to be involved in murder, kidnapping, and car lifting. The dacoits were allegedly involved in robbing a truck loaded with betel nuts when an exchange of firing took place.

On the encounters, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that these should be published widely so that people come to know that Assam is no safe haven for criminals.

Assam government recently informed the state assembly that 29 people have been killed and 96 injured in police firing in Assam in the 11-month tenure of the present government.
