Archana Mahanta

Renowned folk musician Archana Mahanta, mother of Angarag Papon Mahanta, died at a private hospital in Guwahati on August 27.

She was admitted in the hospital for the last few weeks following a brain stroke in July. She was 72.

The news of her demise has left people of Assam in deep sorrow.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal termed Mahanta a ‘shining star’ and losing her is painful.

“Anguished at the demise of renowned Assamese folk singer Archana Mahanta baidew. Today, we have lost a shining star among the cultural stalwarts of the state. I offer my deepest condolences and join all her well-wishers and fans in prayers for the departed soul,” Sonowal tweeted.

Her husband Khagen Mahanta, who died in 2014, was known as ‘Bihu Samrat’ (King of Bihu). The couple reigned the music scenario in Assam in the last decades of the last century.

National Award-winning filmmaker, Utpal Borpujari said that the state lost yet another legend.

“She and her husband, the legendary Khagen Mahanta, gave so many moments of joy to so many generations of people. It’s an incomparable loss for the people. My deepest condolences to Papon and the whole family,” Borpujari said.
