School girl drowns while bathing in Barak river

A sixth-grade student of St Joseph’s School in Badarpur in Karimganj district of Assam, drowned while bathing with her friends in the Barak river on February 21 afternoon.

The incident took place at around 2 pm on February 21, when four students, all boarders in the school hostel, went to have a bath in the river.

While bathing, one of the students slipped and drowned in the deep water of the Barak river. The three other students tried to save her, but they could not help her.

Bashir Ali, a local resident and some students of the hostel witnessed the incident and they rushed to rescue the four girls. They managed to rescue three of them.

Police and SDRF personnel searched for the student till late in the evening, after which the SDRF stopped the rescue operation. It has been reported that none of the students who went to bath in the river knew how to swim.

Hearing the news of this incident, Alagapur MLA Haji Nizam Uddin Chowdhury contacted the Karimganj administration and made a strong plea to find the missing student.
