Senior journalist V Nongsiej dies in Shillong

Senior journalist and Executive Editor of Kynjatshai, a Khasi daily in Meghalaya, V Nongsiej died at a hospital in Shillong on May 22 night following a brief illness. He was 52.

Nongsiej started his career in journalism as a reporter of Mawphor and later climbed the rung becoming Editor of U Peitngor and Kynjatshai.

Expressing condolence, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said Nongsiej’s demise is a loss to the press fraternity of the state. “Nongsiej has displayed utmost professionalism with his factual and objective reporting. His demise is a loss to the press fraternity of our state,” Sangma said in his condolence message.

Condoling the demise of the veteran journalist, Meghalaya Information and Public Relations Minister James Sangma said, “Nongsiej’s vast experience working with Mawpho, U Peitngor and Kynjatshai newspapers had enabled him to contribute immensely to the state’s journalism.”

With the passing away of Nongsiej, Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said, “I have known the Varioustar Nongsiej for a long time… I have lost a good friend. He has been very resourceful member of the fourth estate in the state and have been instrumental in shaping and strengthening the vibrant press that we are proud of the today. His contribution will be long cherished,” the former chief minister wrote in his condolence message to Nongsiej’s wife Kwestina Warjri.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek along with members of the Shillong Press Club also condoled the death of the senior journalist.

“The demise of Nongsiej is big loss not only to the members of the fourth estate but to the state as a whole,” the Club stated in its condolence message to the bereaved family.
