Arunachal Pradesh chief secretary Shakuntala Gamlin becomes the first woman IAS officer from the Northeast to be empanelled as a secretary to the Indian government. As many as 37 IAS officers were on May 4 empanelled to hold secretary-level posts in the central government.

Congratulating Gamlin, Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu wrote on Facebook, “My warm wishes and hearty congratulation to Smt Shakuntala D Gamlin, chief secretary of Arunachal on being empanelled as secretary to Govt. of India. She is first woman IAS from Northeast to achieve this rare feat. Extremely proud of her who has vast experience and knowledge in every field.”

Gamlin is a 1984-batch IAS officer who is serving Arunachal Pradesh as chief secretary. Earlier, she was the acting chief secretary in the Delhi government under Arvind Kejriwal.

Shakuntala Gamlin is the wife of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Jarbom Gamlin. The 1984-batch Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre IAS officer is a post-graduate in Sociology from the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University.
