Meghalaya’s largest circulated English daily ‘The Shillong Times’ will celebrate its 75th year of publication this year with the theme of keeping the environment clean.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, Jitendra Singh will take part in the inaugural programme of the platinum jubilee at U Soso Tham auditorium in Shillong on August 9.

Managing Director of The Shillong Times, Manas Chaudhuri said they have chosen the theme of “keeping the environment clean” as it is the need of the hour to rouse the conscience of the citizens of the state to protect further damage to the environment. Chaudhuri said that the chief minister was receptive on the call to protect the environment.

Moreover, he said that the publication will support the efforts of the government as the people have “waited too long for the government to deliver.”

Editor of the paper, Patricia Mukhim informed that Afroz Shah, who cleaned the Versova beach, Mumbai and United Nations icon, will address the inaugural function of the jubilee. “Afroz Shah will be here and start with the cleaning the dirtiest place,” she said adding that to mark the celebrations, there will be various competitions like sit and draw and essay competitions.

Mukhim said Shah will also address the Martin Luther Christian University and St. Anthony’s College on August 8.

According to Mukhim, media houses should take active participation for a plastic-free city.
