The Assam government has ordered all shops and business establishments in the urban areas in the state to close down by 11 am everyday in view of the COVID-19 situation.

In a revised order issued on May 15, chief secretary Jishnu Barua imposed lockdown in the urban areas in the state from 12 noon onwards every day.

“All shops and business establishments shall shut down at 11 am on all days. There shall be total ban on movement of individuals from 12 noon to 5 am daily, except for the exemptions specified on May 13,” the new order said.

Earlier, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had suggested district administrations in Kamrup Metro, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts to take strong steps to contain the COVID-19 spread.

The chief secretary’s order will be applicable across the urban areas in the state.

Assam on May 14 reported 4078 fresh cases of COVID-19 with 1,107 patients detected in Kamrup Metro district alone. The number of active cases in the state went up to 41,978 with the detection of the fresh cases.
