Sikkim government has started identification of children with special needs in the state to provide them with better facilities and enable them to access various schemes of the state and central governments.

State government departments of social justice through women & child development, health and education have started the significant drive from North Sikkim district headquarter Mangan on February 21.

The exercise will be extended to East, West and South districts of Sikkim where children with special needs (CWSN) and persons with disabilities would be identified.

On February 21, Dr Rinzing T Bhutia of Mangan Hospital chaired the function where joint commissioner Dr MB Chettri and assistant commissioner women & child development were also present.

“Identification of CWSN will be carried out from among the school students, those getting home schooling, out of school and drop outs,” said assistant commissioner PN Pradhan.

The identified persons were enrolled for unique disability ID and were given disability certificates. They will also be given cards so that they are able to get different facilities and avail benefits of government schemes. The cards will be helpful in tracking the progress of health of the special children and persons with disabilities, informed the joint commissioner MB Pradhan.

A team of doctors, nurses and technicians from hospital, resource personnel from education and disability screening board were also present during the screening camp.
