Social media comes in aid of Bokakhat single mother as Assam govt promises help
The news of a single mother pulling a mobile kiosk in search of customers in Bokakhat caught the attention of popular Assam singer Angaraag Papon Mahanta. The singer tweeted to the Assam CM’s office as well as tagged chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal for help. Papon also tweeted the contact information of Mamoni Das (55), a resident of Rajabari village in Bokakhat, who was seen pulling a mobile kiosk in a viral photograph.
On Thursday, Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma replied to Papon’s tweet that the Assam government is going to offer a soft bank loan without mortgrage to start her own business. “I spoke to her. Will provide her a soft bank loan without mortgage to start her own business,” the Assam finance minister tweeted.
The Assam minister was replying to the tweet by Papon which read: “Dear Sir @sarbanandsonwal, Can you advice your office to set up something easier for her? Collected her daughter’s number & it is 8011455810. Hoping to get a reply. @CMOfficeAssam”.

Mamoni Das (55), a resident of Rajabari village in Bokakhat was seen sweating under the sun, pulling a mobile kiosk, in search of customers. The kiosk being her only source of income, the Mamoni was working hard to support the education of her 16 year-old daughter Mamu Das.
Mamoni wants to sustain her daughter’s education while the teenager aims to become a champion in wrestling.
Mamoni’s struggle came to light after a viral Facebook post by Bharatiya Jatiya Congress, block general secretary Jitu Saikia on the Assamese Page. Time8 quoted Saikia as saying that the woman had appealed for help from various organizations but none came to assist her. The local website also shared photographs of Mamu’s certificates in wrestling.
