Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on October 22 felicitated medal winners in Women’s Boxing World Championships 2019 Lovlina Borgohain and Jamuna Boro at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Sarusajai, Guwahati and presented cheques of Rs 20 lakh each to the boxers under the State Sports Policy.

Saying that the feat of both the women pugilists at international stage had brought laurels to the state and country, the chief minister urged them to vie for Olympic glory and strive for continued success at the world stage.

He also highlighted the state government’s initiatives like development of 500 playgrounds in the state under Chief Minister’s Samagra Gramya Unnyan Yojna, Tea Garden Football Competition, setting up of football and archery academies etc. for ushering in a period of development in the sports sector.

Sonowal also urged the parents and teachers to join hands with the government to create a pool of successful sports persons from the state.

The chief minister further stressed on the need to incorporate scientific training and improved infrastructure for rapid development of sports culture in the state and said that state government was taking all necessary steps in that regard.
