Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented Bishnu Rabha Award, 2018 to eminent sculptor Janak Jhankar Narzary and dance exponent Guneswar Bhuyan at the central Rabha Divas function held under the aegis of cultural affairs department in association with Kamrup metro district administration at Sonapur Mini-stadium on June 20.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the society to reinforce human values amongst the youth and indulge in hard work with dedication and perseverance. “Bishnu Prasad Rabha exemplified great human values, hard work and perseverance. He worked for a classless society and strengthened unity and harmony in our society. The students and youth must take lesson from his ideals and pay adequate respect to the legacy bequeathed to us by the legendary personalities of the state to promote peace, harmony, brotherhood and friendship”, he said.

Underlining the huge contribution of Bishnu Prasad Rabha towards Assam’s art and culture, Sonowal said that the cultural doyen worked to materialise his vision of a classless society through a cultural revolution. He moreover said that it is through culture that people could tackle the ills afflicting the society. He also stressed on orienting the youth with great human values for achieving the same.

Expressing deep concern over superstition and other forms of social evils prevailing in today’s age of science and technology, Sonowal said that the people must join hands to work together to rid the society from these ills. He also emphasised on promoting spiritual and moral education amongst youth so that they could take the lead in unleashing reform in the society.

Further saying that it the responsibility of the parents to show their children the path of righteousness, Sonowal cautioned them that their responsibility do not end with admitting their children in good educational institutions alone. He also highlighted the role of mothers in building personality and character of the children saying that they could play a significant role in nurturing their offspring with moral and spiritual values and urged them to come forth to fight against superstition and social evils.

The chief minister also highlighted the state government’s fight against corruption and appealed the people to dissuade corrupt practices. He also urged the parents and teachers to play a more significant role in building the personality of the youth with ethical values. Sonowal also appealed the people to keep close watch over the functioning of the state government.

Recipients of Bishnu Rabha Award, 2018 Janak Jhankar Narzary and Guneswar Bhuyan also shared their thoughts and experience on receiving the award at the event.

Coinciding the function, Chief Minister Sonowal also felicitated 10 distinguished persons of Sonapur area for their contribution to the society in different fields.
