Sonowal urges Kiren Rijiju to take strict action against Delhi Golf Club
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed deep concern over Delhi Golf Club official’s alleged misbehaviour with a Khasi woman who was denied entry to the club because she was wearing jainsem, a traditional Khasi dress.
Sonowal called up Union minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju and asked for exemplary punishment to the Delhi Golf Club over the incident.
Expressing his anguish, Sonowal while discussing the incident with Rijiju, termed the incident as despicable and condemnable. He said denying access to Delhi Golf Club and subsequent misbehaviour by the club management ‘is not only a disrespect to the woman, it is a discriminatory attitude towards Northeasterners’. Sonowal also requested Rijiju for taking exemplary step against Delhi Golf Club so that it acts as a deterrent towards such discriminatory attitude in future.
Honorary adviser to the Assam health department, Nivedita Barthakur Sondhi, who was present at the Delhi Golf Club, narrated the whole incident to the chief minister on Wednesday. She informed Sonowal about how the Delhi Golf Club denied entry to Tailin Lyndoh on the pretext of her traditional dress.
Later, Sondhi also said that she would take up the matter with the National Commission for Scheduled Tribe to which Sonowal assured all assistance from the government.
