People living in Guwahati will soon have to apply for permission for deep water boring.

Taking strong note of depletion of ground water level in Guwahati due to rampant deep boring activities for water source at residential areas, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal suggested insertion of legal provision in the existing GMC Act to address the issue.

Sonowal asked the Guwahati Development Department to suitably amend the existing provisions of the GMC Act and also to go through relevant Acts of other governments to make it mandatory to obtain permission from the government before undertaking any deep boring within the capital city.

Sonowal was reviewing the initiatives of the Guwahati Development Department along with minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya and other officials on July 3.
