To provide employment and prevent road accidents in Assam, the district transport office of Kamrup (M) launched a scheme for skill training in driving at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati on May 21.

Under the scheme, a total of 200 women, 50 from every constituency of the district – Guwahati East, Guwahati West, Dispur and Jalukbari have been selected for the training.

The selected candidates will be provided with a 45 days training course at the Women’s ITI at Rehabari. After successful completion of training, each candidate will be provided with a certificate, a driving licence and Rs 3375 as an appreciation grant.

And they will also be helped with an easy loan for the procurement of a commercial vehicle.

With the vision of employment generation and creating a certified skilled workforce, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma previously announced the scheme under which 50 candidates from each of the 126 constituencies in Assam are to be provided driving lessons.

The candidates are mostly selected from families below the poverty line (BPL). In Kamrup (M) an all-women batch of 200 candidates has been selected.

The candidates will also be trained in soft skills and personality development, communication and interpretation skill for handling tourists and VVIPs, first aid and emergency response, and also on basic skills of tourism guidance. The government wish to incorporate the train drivers into the tourism sector alongside other departments.

Assam transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said: “In today’s world of information technology and artificial intelligence, youth must train themselves in terms of innovation and contribute to the new demands and priorities of companies and communities.”

The minister hoped that the knowledge gained will empower them to be self-reliant, and resourceful and help them to get employment. He further asked Kasturi Bharali, director of employment and craftsmen training to add spoken English as a soft skill to the training module so that youth are better adapted to cater to the needs and demands.

Commissioner of transport Adil Khan said: “In recent times, there is a trend of solo travel and all-women trip among others. Such skilled and trained drivers will add a fillip to the tourism sector of the state.” He added that in total 25 citizen-centric services of the transport department have been made fully online and contactless which has benefited 8 lakh people in the last seven months.
