Strong emphasis on infra development, increasing farmer income: Sikkim CM

The pace of development in Sikkim is a breakthrough achievement as it continues to rise the standard of living along with advancement in tourism, agriculture and dairy industry, chief minister Prem Singh Tamang said on August 15.

Himalayan state of Sikkim celebrated the nation’s 76th Independence Day like the rest of the country by raising the tricolour on August 15.

Chief minister Prem Singh Tamang led the Independence Day celebrations and addressed a sizable audience at the event at Bhaichung Stadium in Namchi, South Sikkim district, and emphasised the advancement and development accomplished since India gained its independence from colonial authority.

He paid homage to the freedom fighters, describing them as “the embodiment of patriotism”, adding that “we owe our independence and dignity to their perseverance and noble sacrifice”.

He stated there had been a breakthrough in both the state’s and the people’s development, referring to the advancements achieved by Sikkim.

Indirectly addressing the financial issues “handed on” to his administration by the former regime, the Sikkim CM said: “We overcame significant obstacles to reach milestones. Our objective is to further develop the state and take it to new heights as a top-tier state in the nation.”

He claimed that since taking office in 2019, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha administration had built 3050 dwellings for the state’s kutcha house-free rural poor, while 502 houses are being built for the urban poor.

He said that his administration had put a strong emphasis on raising farmer income and livestock output.

The state government is working to make organic farming a multi-model agricultural legacy for food security by offering incentives crop-wise and to piggery, poultry, and fisheries owners.
