TMC leader Sushmita Dev

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha member Sushmita Dev moved the Supreme Court against alleged political violence on party workers in Tripura and sought their protection as well as an SIT probe into the incidents.

Dev’s lawyer Rajat Sehgal filed a writ petition on October 29 against the Tripura government, DGP, police superintendents of eight district and district magistrate of West Tripura.

The plea prayed for a direction to the authorities to discharge their constitutional and statutory duties by ensuring security of opposition party functionaries in the state.

It also sought that a special investigation team (SIT) be set up to ensure free and fair probe into incidents of vandalism and hooliganism targeting TMC workers.

The petition filed by Sushmita Dev asked for immediate action on the complaints filed by victims of criminal assaults and intimidation in the run up to the civic polls slated for November 25.

Talking to reporters, Dev said she has written a letter to Tripura governor Satyadeo Narain Arya, demanding that a report be sent to the Union government about the current law and order situation in the state.
