At least three people were killed in Goalpara district of Assam on August 15 when a herd of wild elephants broke into a village and assaulted the residents.
The wild elephants reached Kurung village, which is located near the Assam-Meghalaya border, at 3 am, apparently in quest of food. The settlement is 35 kilometres away from Goalpara town.
The villages started rushing away from the elephants as soon as they noticed them. Sadly, three people were killed as they unintentionally crossed in front of the elephant group.
After hearing the cries of the humans, the elephant herd gradually left.
When the wounded patients arrived at the hospital, doctors pronounced them dead.
“Three people including a child were killed in an elephant attack. The incident was taken place along Assam-Meghalaya bordering area,” Dhruba Dutta, forest range officer of Lakhipur said.
The dead have been named as Sharat Lama, Him Kumar Roy, and Sachit Vishwakarma.
According to the authorities, the same community had a fatal incident six months before when one person died of ‘elephant attack’.
Wild elephants often invade the community, according to the inhabitants, since there is a lack of food in the surrounding area.
The villagers pleaded with the state administration to locate the communities’ elephant buffer zones and take the required action to reduce human-animal conflict.
