Total lockdown has been re-imposed in Guwahati city for the next 14 days starting June 29 to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressing a press conference in Guwahati on June 26 said that the re-imposition of total lockdown in the city was necessitated after almost 50 per cent of the recent daily cases were reported from the city.

“We know lockdown is painful for the economy. But we are helpless as the people here are not following the laid out norms. The number of people testing positive in the city is alarming. Our hospitals have limited number of capacity and hence we are helpless,” the minister said.

The minister informed that all shops and business establishments will be closed during the first 7 days of the lockdown period. These include grocery shops and vegetable shops as well.

Besides, the minister informed that curfew has been imposed across Assam from 7 pm to 7 am starting June 26.

E-commerce services have also been stopped in the city.

Milk services, banks and ATM services will be open with skeleton staff, the minister informed.

The minister added that lockdown has been imposed across all town areas of the state on June 27 and 28. This ‘weekend lockdown’ will continue in those areas.
