Tripura Congress chief Pradyot Manikya Debbarma quits over NRC plea
In a setback to the Congress, Tripura party chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma resigned on Tuesday alleging the central party leadership was not “allowing him to work freely and he has been under pressure to withdraw the NRC case filed in the Supreme Court.”
News agency IANS quoted Debbarma saying that, “I have sent a mail to the central leaders today (Tuesday) stating my decision to resign from the party post. I would submit my formal resignation soon.”
Tripura PCC spokesperson HK Bhowmik however, said that the party in Agartala has no such information regarding resignation of Debbarma but they have also seen some posts in the social media.
“I am not in a position to tell more than that and we have been working hard for past few weeks in Badharghat by-poll held yesterday. Congress will do better in the election. The organisational matter will be decided at top level,” he said.
Since last week, there has been information regarding resignation of Debbarma. The differences between the royal scion and AICC began with his stand for NRC, which AICC opposed. Despite being the president of the party in Tripura, he filed petition in Supreme Court seeking NRC in the state.
On Tuesday morning, Debbarma wrote in Facebook: “I start this day without having to listen to criminals and liars. Not having to worry about which colleague will backstab you, not having to indulge in groupism and backchat. Today I can contribute for my state with a clear mind.”
He said that he was relieved as he would no longer have to “listen to high command on how to accommodate corrupt people in high positions”.
In another post, Debbarma mentioned he resigned as he apologized if he “couldn’t do enough”. “I tried and perhaps lost but could I win when I was alone in this fight from the beginning? Thank you for all your support! I will miss you all and I love you. I am sorry if I couldn’t do enough for u but I really tried. I have decided that a positive mindset to life is what I need and I have changed the people around me who are negative,” he wrote.
