Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma

Tripura has advanced more than Meghalaya in term of doing trade with its neighbour Bangladesh, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma said on November 14.

Stating that Tripura has really advanced; they have connections with the traders in Bangladesh, Sangma said that Tripura has made the initiative and 10-15 more products have been removed from the restriction list.

The CM said that Meghalaya has to do a similar exercise, for its fruits and vegetables to go to Bangladesh, in the fruit processing units.

“There needs to be testing labs in our exit points. We do have the manpower, the buildings but we don’t have the labs. So even though those products are not in the restriction list, but because we don’t have labs in those locations we are not able to sell our products to Bangladesh,” he said.

Describing the Shillong-Dawki road as a very critical infrastructure, Sangma said, “We are waiting for the NOCs from the defence ministry which is taking a bit of time. Once we get clearance we can work on it fast since it is a critical project for us. Power is one area we are looking at”.

On the power sector, Conrad said that there are almost 5-6 projects which are in the phase of being implemented for up-gradation and some are new ones.

“Which as a whole add 700 MW to our capacity. If that happens then we will have some power to sell to Bangladesh,” he said.
