A 60-year-old man from Tripura, died on his way back from Chennai in a hired ambulance when he was near the Andhra-Odisha border.

The cancer patient, who went to Chennai for treatment, belonged to from Kamalpur in Dhalai district of North Tripura.

Reports said that the patient was suffering from blood cancer and went for treatment in Chennai on March 20. After medication, he was released from the hospital on April 2 but they were stuck in Chennai due to the nationwide lockdown.

On April 22, the family members hired an ambulance for Rs 2 lakh to travel back home, covering a distance of around 3200 km.

But, somewhere near the border between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on April 23, the patient fell ill and was immediately taken to a hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

The family members continued their journey in the same ambulance which reached their hometown on April 27.

“My father was suffering for last few years but recently, he was responding well to the treatment and he was taken for regular check-up and medications to Chennai,” said the son of the deceased patient.

Meanwhile, the health department has initiated COVID-19 tests on those who returned from Chennai. Health officials said that COVID-19 tests would be carried out although they are asymptomatic and the entire family would be under observation.
