Unable to manage finances, a young couple allegedly died by suicide by setting themselves on fire at a village in Dhubri district of Assam on August 22.

Villagers said that the duo often quarrelled over non-payment of a loan taken against a commercial vehicle.

Police said that Kanak Nath (30) and Majani Nath (22), set themselves on fire in a fit of rage at their Futkibari residence under the Bilasipara police station area in Dhubri district.

The couple have left a four-year-old boy.

Locals said that Nath had taken an autorickshaw on loan for their livelihood.

Nath used to repay the instalment to the authorities with the income from the autorickshaw.

However, the problem compounded for the couple following the nationwide lockdown announced on March 24. The amount of loan accumulated as plying of vehicles was stopped.

“The non-payment of loan led to dispute between the husband and the wife. They took the extreme step to end their life apparently under duress due to financial constraints,” said villagers.

The police have started further investigation into the matter.
