A headmaster of a primary school in Demow in Assam’s Sivasagar district allegedly died by suicide as he was unable to operate the online attendance system introduced by the state education department recently.

The family of Kaliprasad Chetia, headmaster at Lakhmipathar LP School, said he took the extreme step after not being able to operate the online RIIMS attendance system.

According to Kalita’s colleagues he was depressed over not being able to cope up with the new online system for marking attendance.

In September this year, the Assam government had instructed school authorities to make teachers download the RIIMS app. The app was meant to let the government observe the attendance of teachers and other staffers.

Many teachers opposed the state government for asking them to download the RIIMS app for their biometric attendance. They said that this move would infringe on their privacy.
