International Day of Yoga on June 21

Ahead of the eighth International Day of Yoga on June 21, prime minister Narendra Modi said on June 13 said that yoga has gained tremendous popularity globally.

People from different walks of life, including leaders, CEOs, sportspersons and actors regularly practice yoga and talk about how it has helped them, the prime minister tweeted in multiple languages, including in Assamese.

Modi also posted a video which highlighted various details and benefits of the ancient Indian practice, and also carried snippets of his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.

Subsequently, June 21 was adopted as the International Day of Yoga.

As run up to the International Day of Yoga, Union ministry of Ayush is organizing several ‘Yoga Utsav’ programmes across India.

The ministry of Ayush, with active support from Government of Assam, organized a Yoga Utsav at the iconic Shivdol in Sivasagar district of Assam on May 2 to mark the 50 days countdown to International Day of Yoga, 2022.

Union Ayush minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, MPs from Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, senior officials from central and all Northeast states including eminent dignitaries and experts, Yoga enthusiasts and students participated in the Yoga Utsav.
