Records continued to tumble at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), with ‘Golden butterfly’ specialty tea of Dikom Tea Estate fetching highest ever price in public auction as it was sold for Rs 75,000 per kg August 13.

The ‘Golden butterfly’ has improved upon the last record of Rs 70,501 per kg, fetched by Maijan Golden Tips, also sold through GTAC on July 31 last.

The Maijan Golden Tips had broken the day-old record set by Manohari Gold Tea, who was auctioned for Rs 50,000 per kg on July 30 at the GTAC.

Broker J Thomas and Co Pvt Ltd sold the ‘Golden butterfly’ in Sale no 33 of the day, with M/S Assam Tea Traders buying the lot of one kg offered for auction.

Lalit Kumar Jalan of Assam Tea Traders said, “An exotic tea is judged by its aroma, taste and colour, and this tea is characterized by extremely mellow and sweet caramel flavour that matches the exoticness it deserves”.

“We are one of the oldest tea buyers in Assam that have been providing quality tea to the buyers across India and even abroad,” he added.

Dinesh Bihani, secretary, Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, said, “In the world of tea, this auction centre has created an image of a place where records are meant to be broken and history is meant to be re-written”.

“GTAC is giving an opportunity to all the sellers who want to sell their teas at best prices. The best teas are always in good demand and the buyers are always ready to pay a handsome price,” he added.
