A clash broke out between police and a mob in Shillong after alleged assault on a bus conductor by miscreants at Them Mawlong on May 31.
Reports said that after the assault on the conductor, there was a stand-off between the drivers of the STPS buses and residents of Punjabi Line.
Late evening, the situation flared up in Motphran when a mob wanted to march towards the Them Mawlong area but was prevented by the cops.
The police fired tear gas to disperse the mob. Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in the area. Reports said that a journalist and four civilians were injured in the clash.
“Curfew has been imposed in areas under Lumdiengjri police station and Cantonment Beat House from 4 am this (Friday) morning in view of the breakdown of law and order in Shillong city (Motphran, Mawkhar and adjoining areas) following the violent clash on Thursday night,” deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, Peter S Dkhar said.
Reports said that unconfirmed videos on the social media led to further escalation of the situation.
