Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on July 26 took part in an interactive programme with several college teachers and principals of Guwahati at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra.

Interacting with the teachers, the chief minister said that they must come forward and fulfil their responsibility as mentors to nurture the young generation. “The teachers must live up-to their image of being the role models of the students. The upcoming generation must be made aware about our resources and potential for making them future citizens committed to the society. Students need to learn the history and geography of our country and the state without which the future roadmap for Assam’s development cannot be prepared,” Sonowal said addressing the ‘Bag Binimoy’ function organized by the Assam higher education department.

Saying that teaching is a noble profession as it provides opportunity to nurture human resource for the country, Sonowal urged the teachers to instil the values of a democratic society among the students. “Parents and teachers have the responsibility to nurture the young generation as good human beings who can strengthen the foundation of a morally strong society,” he said.

He also said that to make Guwahati the education hub of South East Asia, educational institutes here must become model institutes. In order to take full advantage of Act East Policy to make Northeast the new engine of growth for the country, the young generation of the state must be empowered with knowledge and skills, he remarked.

Saying that ‘Gunotsav’ initiative of the state government has brought many aspects of the education system to light, the chief minister urged the colleges of the city to strive for building a smart education system and also making the students aware about right usage of social networking sites. He also called on the teachers to send out the right message about NRC up-gradation process.
