Racism seems to have become a topic tearing the world apart, and sadly it’s something that continues to exist in India as well. Recently, a Manipuri woman reportedly faced a barrage of racist comments at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, when she was asked if she was really ‘Indian’.
Going to represent India at the 10th EWHA Global Empowerment Program (EGEP), organised by EWHA Woman’s University and UN Women, Monika Khangembam from Imphal was stopped by an immigration officer who asked her “Pakka Indian ho?”
When she shared her ordeal on Facebook, the post immediately went viral and caught attention of external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj among others.
On Sunday night, Swaraj tweeted: “Monika Khangembam – I am sorry to know this. Immigration is not with me. I will speak to my senior colleague Shri @rajnathsingh ji to sensitise Immigration officials at the airport.”

But that didn’t end the ordeal. The lady on Sunday night shared another long post on Facebook which actually highlighted the dark secrets of racism prevailing in the country. “That’s not racism… don’t play a victim,” were among the messages Monika received.
Keep fighting girl.
