Popular minority students’ leader in Assam, Lafiqul Islam, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Kokrajhar on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old student leader was the president of All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU). Recently, he spearheaded several anti-establishment agitations.

Eye witnesses said of seeing two bike-borne youths fleeing the area after firing bullets from a close range.

Police have not confirmed anything till the filing of this report. The ABMSU and others have sought proper investigation and punishment for the culprits. Many suspected it to be a political killing.

“I strongly condemn the murder of ABMSU president today. It shows the failure of government to keep law and order in control. Late Islam boldly raised the voice against various injustice meted to people living in BTAD area by government as well as a section of people. We demand arrest of the murderers immediately,” senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia said.

Mrinal Talukdar, a senior journalist who recently anchored a television show with the student leader, said, “Lafiqul’s killing is shocking. I found him secular. It seems to be a big political killing. It may have dangerous ramification”.
