AAI chairman reviews various airport projects in Northeast

Airports Authority of India chairman reviewed various projects and operations of North Eastern Region Airports in Guwahati on February 26.

Arvind Singh, Chairman at Airports Authority of India (AAI), on his maiden visit to the Northeast reviewed various projects and operations of NER Airports at the AAI regional headquarters in Guwahati and interacted with officials.

Singh met Chief Secretary of Assam Kumar Sanjay Krishna, and discussed several aviation related infrastructure and upcoming projects in the state, a press statement said.

Assam has most number of operational airports in the region – at Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Tezpur, Jorhat and Lilabari.

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati is considered the gateway to the Northeast states and a major hub for export of local products and tourism.

The meeting focused on enhancing more cargo facilities for the benefit of farmers and scope for agri-business in the state as well as adjoining areas. The passenger movement at the LGBI Airport has already crossed 6 million mark in 2019. Considering the need of hour, AAI is constructing a world-class new integrated passenger terminal building at Guwahati which will be equipped with all major facilities.

And the new airport building is expected to be operational by 2021, the statement added.

The focus point of the review meet in general emphasized on enhancing the existing passenger facilities at the airport and planning for the future expansion of the terminal buildings across the region.
