Incumbent president Atul Bora was on August 27 re-elected as Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) chief for next three years.

Keshab Mahanta was also re-elected as the working president for the next term in a general council meeting.

Both are cabinet ministers in the BJP-led state government.

Talking to reporters in Guwahati later, Bora said the party was working with an eye on next year’s state elections.

He added that relevance of regional parties has grown over time and said AGP will continue reflecting the aspirations of the people of the state.

Bora also dismissed of any dissidence in the party.

The general council meeting was held despite a court injunction on August 26, restricting holding the meeting.

A section of AGP leaders and workers have alleged that the general council meeting is unconstitutional and had approached the court against it.

Bora and others have, however, claimed that the meeting is as per the constitution of the party.
