BJP, Congress come together to nominate Chakat Aboh as consensus candidate for Khonsa West bypoll

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and three other political parties has unanimously selected Chakat Aboh, wife of late Tirong Aboh, as a candidate for the upcoming Khonsa West Assembly bypoll in Arunachal Pradesh.

The seat became vacant after Tirong Aboh of National People’s Party (NPP) was killed in an ambush on May 21, just two days before the assembly poll results, which he later won.

Addressing a joint press conference in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that Chakat Aboh is the consensus candidate of five political parties – BJP, Congress, NPP, Janata Dal (United) and People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) – for the Khonsa West Assembly bypoll.

“Today, we had a detailed discussion with representatives of five political parties to field a consensus candidate for Khonsa West Assembly by-elections. All parties kept their views and a conclusion was drawn to field a consensus candidate. We have decided to field Chakat Aboh, wife of late Tirong Aboh,’’ Khandu said.

The chief minister added that as Chakat Aboh has been selected as a consensus candidate, she will file nomination as an Independent for the October 21 by-polls.

Arunachal Congress president and former chief minister Nabam Tuki, who was also present in the press meet, said, “All the parties today decided to field a consensus candidate. We have sympathy for the family members of late Tirong Aboh.”

BJP state president Tapir Gao said, “In the history of Arunachal politics this is for the first time that a collective decision has been taken to field a consensus candidate through a consensus decision by majority of political parties of the state.”

Chakat Aboh, who was also present, hailed the decision and thanked all the five parties for reposing their trust on her.
