People have shown faith on chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal with early trends indicating BJP and its allies leading in Assam. The counting of votes for 126 seats in Assam started from 8 am on May 2.

So far, till 11 am BJP and its allies are leading in more than 78 seats. Whereas, Congress and its partners are taking leads in 41 seats.

“I’m not surprised with the early trends. People have shown faith on the ruling party. It’s mainly because of the image of the party under the leadership of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal,” said a political analyst in Guwahati who didn’t wish to be named.

He, however, said that there is a lack of strong leadership in the opposition camp.

“We also have to see the reality that the Congress doesn’t have a leader who is accepted widely as Sonowal.”

There has been speculation who will be the chief minister if BJP comes to power again. Many hinted the name of state finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The analyst further indicated that under the current circumstances Sonowal is likely to continue as the CM. “What my understanding is that Sonowal will be the chief minister. There is no reason why he should be removed,” he added.
