Four blasts rock Assam on Republic Day

Four low-intensity blasts hit parts of eastern Assam on early Sunday morning as the nation celebrated its 71st Republic Day.

While three blasts were reported from Dibrugarh district, one has been reported from Charaideo district.

Two blasts were reported from areas under Dibrugarh police station while one was reported from Sonari.

No person was injured in any of the blast.

Police and paramilitary forces have rushed to the spots to ascertain the extent of damage and nature of explosives used.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, condemning the blasts, said the culprits will be identified and brought to book. “Strongly condemn the bomb blasts in a few places of Assam. This cowardly attempt to create terror on a sacred day only exhibits the frustration of the terror groups after their total rejection by the people. Our govt will take the sternest action to bring the culprits to book,” the chief minister tweeted.

The involvement of the banned ULFA (I) is suspected behind the blasts as the outfit had called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebration.
