Even as people in the rural areas are still struggling to phase off the demonetisation woes, Assam Congress legislature party leader Debabrata Saikia on Monday demanded that the Union government should provide compensation to the family of those who have died due to demonetization.
Saikia also urged that the government to provide alternative livelihood arrangements to those who lost their jobs due to demonetization.
“The demonetization decision was taken in a hurry without consulting experts which has hampered livelihood of everyone in the country. More than 100 people lost their lives – standing in the unending queues or failing to get money for their emergency needs. Who will take this responsibility? We want the government to immediately make some efforts to compensate the death of these innocent people,” Saikia told reporters in the party headquarters in Guwahati on Monday.
Saikia said that as more than 48 lakh workers have lost their jobs in the country, the government should make arrangements for alternatives. “In Assam, the tea sector and the small time vegetable growers received a huge blow. In the name of seizing black money, the government is harassing the common people,” Saikia added.
He said that though the Narendra Modi government has been insisting on cashless economy, there is lack of infrastructure for which people are suffering.
“First of all you need to have proper infrastructure. But we haven’t seen any such kind of infrastructure. Besides, we have seen that across the world many developed countries have not been able to do it successfully. This is simply impractical,” Saikia asserted.
