Guwahati-based journalist found dead near residence

Guwahati-based journalist Purbajyoti Chutiya who was missing since March 28 night was found dead lying in a drain near his residence on March 29. The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained, police said.

Chutiya has been associated with vernacular daily Niyomiya Barta.

“On March 28 evening he (Purbajyoti Chutiya) came out from his rented accommodation at Lakhimingar in Hatigaon. But he didn’t return. And in the morning, his body was found lying in a drain near his residence,” said a close aide.

Police, who are investigating the incident, said that it will be too early to comment on it.

“We are into it. Only after the post mortem, we will be able to tell you the cause of death,” said an officer at the site.

The 50-year-old journalist, who hailed from Moran in eastern Assam, used to live with his daughter and wife in Guwahati.

“He was attending office since March 27, the day before Holi. We can’t rule out any foul play. So, we appeal to the police to carry out proper investigation,” said a colleague of the demised journalist who was present at the site.
