The Federation of School Teachers Association (FASTOM) in Meghalaya on May 9 threatened the state government of holding massive public rallies in Shillong and Tura from May 12, if the government fails to address their demand.
The decision was taken after the leaders of FASTOM took out a protest in front of the main secretariat against chief minister Conrad Sangma for his alleged failure to call them for talks to discuss the demands of all Adhoc teachers in the state.
Speaking to media persons, spokesperson of FASTOM, Mayborn Lyngdoh said that the leaders of the association were scheduled to have a discussion with Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on May 9 but till now they have not received any formal appointment letter.
“If the chief minister fails to call us for talks, we will hold a massive public rally in Shillong and Tura from May 12 and if the discussion is not in our favour all the Adhoc teachers will camp indefinite in the streets opposite Shillong’s main secretariat and mini secretariat in Tura,” said Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh said that since last week the FASTOM had relaxed all forms of agitational programmes since the state government had assured them of discussion at the chief minister level but till date they have not received any official appointment from the chief minister’s office.
He added that the teachers under FASTOM had relaxed all forms of protest for one week as they are ready to work with the state government “but as of today it seems that the Meghalaya government, especially the chief minister, is not keen to listen to our demands or to resolve the issue which we have been demanding since 2019”.
