Seven ethanol plants will be set up in Assam with an investment of around Rs 1500-2000 crore.
The ethanol projects will be set up in the state under the Assam’s government’s Ethanol Production Promotion Policy 2021.
The Assam cabinet recently approved the Assam Ethanol Production Promotion Policy 2021 and the Policy shall be valid upto March 31, 2026.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “We have produced only 20 per cent fuel. The government has allowed 20 per cent ethanol blending fuel. Seven ethanol plants will be set up in Assam.”
“After completion of these projects we will not be dependent on the international market for 40 per cent crude oil. Under the new ethanol policy adopted by the state government, Assam got 14 investment proposals and out of that the Union government and Assam government jointly approved seven. We will have an MoU signing ceremony soon. These are the biggest investment we got immediately after our government came to power. These are all private sector,” CM Sarma said.
He further said that, these projects are apart from the project of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).
“NRL’s project will be inaugurated next year. We give NRL as our first priority because the Assam government has 26 per cent share in NRL. All seven are rice-bran-based ethanol projects for blending with fuel and the investment will be Rs 1500-2000 crore. If other states of the Northeast region will allow Assam to do more ethanol projects, then Assam will get 4-5 more ethanol projects,” CM Sarma added.
The Union government has been implementing Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme throughout the country, except in Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands.
