The Supreme Court on August 31 imposed a token fine of Re 1 on advocate Prashant Bhushan in a contempt case against him.
The court ordered that if Bhushan fails to pay the fine, he will be sentenced to 3 months in jail and suspension of his practice for 3 years.
A bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Arun Mishra passed the order.
“We are imposing fine of Re 1 on advocate Prashant Bhushan in contempt case. If he fails to pay the amount, he will be sentenced to 3 months in jail and suspension of his practice for 3 years,” Justice Mishra, reading the judgement said, while pronouncing it through videoconferencing.
The apex court had earlier on August 14 held Prashant Bhushan guilty of suo motu criminal contempt for his tweets.
Prashant Bhushan was held guilty by the top court for criminal contempt for “malicious and scurrilous” tweets against CJI Sharad Arvind Bobde and four past chief justices of India.
