The total shutdown to boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit ended peacefully in the valley districts of Manipur on January 4.
The shutdown call, imposed by the Coordination Committee (CorCom), a conglomerate of major rebel groups based in the state, commenced from 1 am and lasted till the prime minister left the state.
However, a large number of vehicles transporting people from different places triggered a traffic chaos on the roads leading to the function site at Hatta Kangjeibung.
Personnel of traffic control police assisted by the civil police personnel had a hard time managing the traffic even though traffic police made elaborate traffic arrangements.
However, other roads and streets across Imphal looked deserted as almost all commercial and private vehicles stayed off the road during the shutdown hours.
Shops and other business establishments in almost all the markets across Imphal and in the outskirts of the city remained closed for the day.
Only a few commercial and private vehicles were seen plying on the roads.
Government offices functioned with poor staff attendance. Petrol pumps were not functioning during the strike hours.
Similar situations were reported from other valley districts. However, no bandh impact was seen in the hill districts of Manipur where shops and other business centers opened as usual.
Commercial and private vehicles also plied normally in the hill districts except non-arrival of the inter-district service vehicles.
