Towards this, a training program was inaugurated on May 8 by Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya Wansuk Syiem in Thangsning village, located on the outskirts of Shillong.

As many as 25 people took part in the training program. The 25, from the hamlet comprising 110 households, were identified as beneficiaries for the one-week candle making training. The trainees’ primary source of livelihood is agriculture. The Rajya Sabha MP thanked NRL for sponsoring the training programme which would benefit the villagers.

NRL had earlier sponsored a training program on candle making in Meghalaya during July 2016 in association with Meghalaya Institute of Entrepreneurship & WISE. In addition, several such training programs have been undertaken in other Northeast states including Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur. The participants trained last year were already in the process of setting up their own cottage industries, procuring wax from NRL.

The initiative has also helped revive several dying candle making units in the region and restored livelihood opportunities for many.
