Iconic Assamese actor and director Abdul Majid passed away on Sunday at the age of 86 following cardiac arrest at GNRC hospitals in Guwahati. Majid whose illustrious career spread around five decades has done some of the most remarkable works in Assamese film industry.

Besides being a popular actor, he also directed some of greatest hits of Assamese film industry.

He was admitted in the hospital on September 15 after his health condition deteriorated.

His ‘Chameli Memsaab’, for which Bhupen Hazarika won the national award for music direction, was awarded with Rajat Kamal in 23rd National Film Festival as the best film in Assamese Language. Later it was re-made in Hindi and Bengali.

The multifaceted man of Assam film industry who popularly known as Mazid ka has directed films like Maram Trishna, Chameli Memsaab, Banahangsa, Banjui, Ponakan, Uttarkaal and many others.

His last film as a director was ‘Saat Nomboror Sandhanat’ which was released in 2016.

“Majid ka was such an energetic person. He wanted to do another film. But it never got realized,” said an actor who rushed to the hospital after the news broke.

Majid was born in Jorhat in 1931 and he started his carrier in theatres in 1950 at his home town. Till date, he has performed in over two hundred plays staged in different parts of eastern India. Majid started his career in celluloid through ‘Ronga Police’ in 1957.

Majid was honoured as the best director in the multilingual drama competition held in New Delhi in 1971. He was awarded with best director’s award for Assamese television serial ‘Naamghoria’. Assam government conferred Bisnu Prashad Rabha Award on him in 1996. He was also honoured by Asom Sahitya Sabha and the Assam Tribune group.

Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi also condoled the demise of the actor. “Saddened on the demise of veteran Assamese actor and film maker Abdul Majid. My prayers to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace,” Gogoi tweeted.
